Notes from the fare sources

Season: All limited express charges here are for an ordinary-car reserved seat in the normal season. JR's fare guide states that the reserved-seat charge is 400 yen higher in the busiest season, 200 yen higher in the busy season and 200 yen lower in the off-peak season (the guide notes that JR Hokkaido conventional lines have no busy/off-peak adjustment, and JR Kyushu conventional lines and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen have no off-peak adjustment). Non-reserved seats cost the normal-season reserved charge minus 530 yen regardless of date.

Green Car: Green Car total = basic fare + (the ordinary reserved-seat limited express charge that applies on the travel date - 530 yen) + Green Car charge. Tokaido/Sanyo Green Car charges by operating distance: up to 100 km 1,300 / 200 km 2,800 / 400 km 4,190 / 600 km 5,400 / 800 km 6,600 / 801 km or more 7,790 yen (same for Nozomi and Hikari/Kodama; adults and children pay the same). JR Central and JR West will raise the Tokaido/Sanyo Green Car charge for travel from 15 Dec 2027 (e.g. 7,790 to 12,300 yen for 801 km+).

Nozomi / Mizuho: Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen are not covered by the JAPAN RAIL PASS. A Pass holder may ride them by buying an [ONLY WITH JAPAN RAIL PASS] NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket for each ride before boarding; one price applies to Green Car, ordinary reserved and non-reserved seats (Green Car seats only for Green Pass holders). Examples: Tokyo-Nagoya 4,180, Tokyo-Kyoto/Shin-Osaka 4,960, Tokyo-Hiroshima 6,500, Shin-Osaka-Hakata 4,960 yen. For non-Pass travellers, JR Central and JR West will raise the Nozomi/Mizuho reserved-seat charge for tickets bought from 1 Jul 2027 (e.g. Tokyo-Shin-Osaka total 14,720 to 15,420 yen).

FAQ

Do Shinkansen fares change by season?

The table fares are for the normal season; enter a travel date in the fare finder to apply that day's seasonal charge from JR's published calendar. All limited express charges here are for an ordinary-car reserved seat in the normal season.

How is the Green Car fare calculated?

Green Car fare = basic fare + (reserved-seat limited express charge − ¥530) + Green Car charge. With Nozomi or Mizuho, the Nozomi/Mizuho limited express charge is used instead. If the Green Car charge for a segment is not verified, the Green Car fare is shown as not yet verified rather than estimated.

How much cheaper is a non-reserved seat?

JR's fare guide states that non-reserved seats cost the normal-season reserved charge minus ¥530, regardless of date. The fare finder shows this line only for Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen pairs whose stored charge is for trains with non-reserved cars; elsewhere it is left out.

Can I ride Nozomi or Mizuho with a JR Pass?

Not by the pass alone. Nozomi and Mizuho trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen are not covered by the JAPAN RAIL PASS. The fare finder shows the ticket price for each pair where it is verified.

What happens when a fare or time is not verified?

It is shown as “not yet verified”. We never fill gaps with estimates; a value appears only after we have read it on an official page.
