What the numbers are, and what they are not

  • International flights to and from Japan are not included in any line.
  • The figures are survey averages over all respondents, including people who spent nothing in a category (for example, stayed with friends). They are not prices quoted by hotels, restaurants or shops.
  • The accommodation figure per night is per person, not per room, and is not a hotel room rate.
  • The survey amounts include the in-Japan share of package-tour fees, split across the categories.
  • Transport, entertainment and shopping are averages for a whole trip. They are shown as one trip's worth and are not scaled to the number of nights you enter.
  • Food per day is the trip average spread over every day in Japan, arrival and departure days included. Average nights are published to one decimal place, and the per-night and per-day values inherit that rounding.
  • Survey year: 2025 (final figures). Prices in 2026 may differ. The United Kingdom and Canada leisure figures are based on fewer than 500 respondents.

Formulas

  • Accommodation = survey accommodation per trip ÷ survey average nights × your nights × travellers.
  • Food & drink = survey food per trip ÷ (survey average nights + 1) × (your nights + 1) × travellers. A trip of N nights has N + 1 days in Japan.
  • Transport, entertainment and shopping = survey average per trip × travellers (not scaled to nights).
  • Departure tax = ¥3,000 × travellers, for departures from 1 July 2026.
  • Shinkansen = sum of your one-way regular fares (basic fare + reserved-seat limited express charge, normal season) × travellers.

FAQ

How much does a week in Japan cost?

For one sightseeing visitor from the United States staying 7 nights, the survey averages give ¥278,792 including the ¥3,000 departure tax, before international flights. This is a survey average, not a quote.

Is the accommodation figure a hotel price?

No. It is the survey's accommodation spend per person (¥151,033 for US leisure visitors) divided by their average stay (10.7 nights), which is ¥14,115.2 per person per night. It averages over everyone, including people who paid nothing for lodging, and is per person, not per room.

Why do transport and shopping not change with the number of nights?

The Japan Tourism Agency publishes these as an average per trip, not per night. Scaling them to your nights would be our own estimate, so the calculator shows one trip's worth.

Are flights to Japan included?

No. The survey does not count international airfare in any category, so flights must be added separately. The departure tax is listed on its own line because it is usually added to the air ticket.
