How each line is worked out

A 3-day trip = 2 nights and 3 days in Japan. Example: United States.

  • Accommodation (per person per night (survey average))¥151,033 ÷ 10.7 average nights = ¥14,115.2 per night × 2 nights × 1 traveller = ¥28,230
  • Food & drink (per person per day (survey average))¥69,704 ÷ (10.7 + 1) days = ¥5,957.6 per day × 3 days (2 nights + 1) × 1 traveller = ¥17,873
  • Transport in Japan (per person per trip (survey average, not scaled to your nights))¥42,074 per trip × 1 traveller = ¥42,074
  • Entertainment & services (per person per trip (survey average, not scaled to your nights))¥15,620 per trip × 1 traveller = ¥15,620
  • Shopping (per person per trip (survey average, not scaled to your nights))¥71,630 per trip × 1 traveller = ¥71,630
  • Departure tax (International Tourist Tax) (per person per departure)¥3,000 × 1 traveller = ¥3,000

What the numbers are, and what they are not

  • International flights to and from Japan are not included in any line.
  • The figures are survey averages over all respondents, including people who spent nothing in a category (for example, stayed with friends). They are not prices quoted by hotels, restaurants or shops.
  • The accommodation figure per night is per person, not per room, and is not a hotel room rate.
  • The survey amounts include the in-Japan share of package-tour fees, split across the categories.
  • Transport, entertainment and shopping are averages for a whole trip. They are shown as one trip's worth and are not scaled to the number of nights you enter.
  • Food per day is the trip average spread over every day in Japan, arrival and departure days included. Average nights are published to one decimal place, and the per-night and per-day values inherit that rounding.
  • Survey year: 2025 (final figures). Prices in 2026 may differ. The United Kingdom and Canada leisure figures are based on fewer than 500 respondents.

FAQ

How much does a 3-day trip to Japan cost for one person from the US?

¥178,427 for 2 nights, using the Japan Tourism Agency's 2025 averages for US sightseeing visitors plus the ¥3,000 departure tax. International flights are not included, and this is an average, not a quote.

Which country's visitors spend the most on a 3-day trip?

Applying each market's survey averages to 2 nights: Australia ¥197,635, United States ¥178,427, United Kingdom ¥176,413, Canada ¥162,544. The differences come from each market's average spend per night and per trip in the 2025 survey.

Why are transport and shopping the same for every trip length?

The survey publishes them as an average for a whole trip, not per night. Scaling them to a different trip length would be our own estimate, so they are shown as one trip's worth.

Is the accommodation amount what a hotel costs?

No. ¥14,115.2 per night (US) is the survey's accommodation spend per person divided by the average stay. It includes people who paid nothing for lodging and is per person, not per room.
