Shinkansen oversized baggage: the rules in one page
On the main western Shinkansen lines, a big suitcase needs a reserved seat with space for it. The reservation itself is free; forgetting it costs a fee. Here is how to measure, what to book and what JR Pass holders do.
Large suitcases at a glance
- No reservation needed
- Total of three sides 160 cm or less
- Reservation required
- 161–250 cm on the Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, Kyushu Shinkansen and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen
- Cost of reserving
- No extra charge
- Without a reservation
- ¥1,000 fee (tax included); over 250 cm is not allowed at all
Read on JR Central, JR West, JR Kyushu and JAPAN RAIL PASS pages; sources under each section.
Your bags ride in the car with you, and JR sets size limits on them. On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, passengers with very large bags must reserve a seat that comes with a place for the bag. The system is simple once you know the two numbers that matter: 160 cm and 250 cm, always measured as the total of length, width and height.
Measure your bag: the three size bands
Add the three sides of the bag, including wheels and handles. That one number decides everything.
| Total of three sides | What to do | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| 160 cm or less | Nothing to reserve | At your feet, in the overhead rack, or in the baggage storage area on the deck |
| 161–250 cm | Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area or compartment (same price as a normal reserved seat) | Behind the last row of the car, or in a lockable deck compartment |
| Over 250 cm | Not allowed on board | — |
JR Central writes the reservation band as "between 161 and 250 cm (64 and 98 inches)" and "more than 160 cm"; 160 cm itself needs no reservation. The same JR Central page, JR West and the JAPAN RAIL PASS site also write the band as "between 160 and 250 cm". This site follows the stricter reading used throughout JR Central's text: 160 cm or less needs no reservation, 161-250 cm does. JR's general allowance of two pieces per person (each up to 30 kg, 250 cm in total and 200 cm long) still applies.
Worked examples
The sizes below are examples to show the arithmetic, not the measurements of any brand. Measure your own bag.
| Example | Sides (cm) | Total | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cabin-size suitcase | 55 + 40 + 25 | 120 cm | No reservation needed |
| Medium suitcase | 68 + 47 + 28 | 143 cm | No reservation needed |
| Large suitcase | 75 + 52 + 32 | 159 cm | No reservation needed |
| Extra-large suitcase | 82 + 56 + 34 | 172 cm | Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area |
| Ski or golf bag | 190 + 35 + 30 | 255 cm | Cannot be brought on board |
| Oversized box | 120 + 90 + 50 | 260 cm | Cannot be brought on board |

Which lines need a reservation
The rule covers the Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, Kyushu Shinkansen and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen: in practice Tokyo – Nagoya – Kyoto – Shin-Osaka – Hiroshima – Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo, and Takeo-Onsen – Nagasaki. JR Central's own FAQ is explicit that reservations are only required on these lines, and JR West adds that oversized baggage is not subject to reservation on conventional (non-Shinkansen) trains.
For the JR East network (Tohoku, Hokkaido, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen) we have not verified a baggage reservation rule, because JR East's own pages refuse our reader. If you are riding from Tokyo to Sendai, Kanazawa or Niigata, the 250 cm general limit above still applies, but check JR East's rules on the day.

The four places a big bag can go
"Oversized baggage seat" is really two different products, and there are two more places to know about. The compartment is the one people confuse: it is a locker on the deck, not a space behind your seat, and it has its own size limit.
| Space | Where | Size | Trains | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baggage storage area on the deck | The storage area on the deck (vestibule) of the car. | Large suitcases and heavy items with a total of three dimensions of 160 cm or less. | Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen | No reservation needed. |
| Seat with an oversized baggage area | Last row of some reserved-seat cars; the bag goes in the space behind the seats. | Total of three dimensions 161-250 cm. | Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen | Reserve it with your reserved-seat or Green Car ticket. Same price as an ordinary reserved or Green Car seat; no extra charge. |
| Seat with an oversized baggage compartment | A lockable compartment on the deck closest to your seat, beside the washroom. It locks with a contactless smart card; some cards and mobile devices do not work. | One item per compartment. Upper level within 80 x 60 x 50 cm (book an aisle seat); lower level within 80 x 60 x 40 cm (book a window seat). | Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen 16-car trains only | Reserve it like any reserved seat, no extra charge. JR West states that starting from 1 July 2025 some compartments can also be used without a reservation on a trial basis (JR Central also mentions the trial but gives no start date). |
| Supreme Class cabin (car 7 or car 10) | Inside the private cabin. Car 7 has a dedicated area for items within 80 x 60 x 40 cm; car 10 has no dedicated baggage area outside the cabins. | Oversized baggage (161-250 cm in total) may be carried on. | Tokaido Shinkansen Nozomi trains with Supreme Class | Supreme Class itself is reserved on smartEX. |
Which one to pick? A seat with an oversized baggage area takes any bag up to 250 cm in total, so it is the safe choice for long or bulky items such as ski bags. The compartment is handy for a large but compact suitcase because it locks, but it only fits bags within its length, width and height limits, and it exists only on 16-car Tokaido and Sanyo trains. If your bag does not fit the compartment, JR West says to book an oversized baggage area seat instead.

How to reserve
- Reserve a 'seat with an oversized baggage area' (last row of some reserved cars) or a 'seat with an oversized baggage compartment' (a lockable compartment on the deck; Tokaido and Sanyo 16-car trains only) when you buy your reserved-seat ticket. It costs the same as an ordinary reserved seat or Green Car seat; there is no extra charge.
- At a JR ticket office: tell the staff you are traveling with oversized baggage.
- At a reserved-seat ticket machine at a JR station: choose 'Seat with an oversized baggage area'.
- Online: Tokaido Sanyo Kyushu Shinkansen Online Reservation Service (smartEX), JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION or JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation.
- JAPAN RAIL PASS holders: ask at a JR ticket office, or reserve via 'JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation' (available since 1 June 2020). The JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS online booking site cannot reserve these seats; use a ticket counter.
- These seats go on sale one month in advance like other reserved seats; if all are taken, reserve a different train.
JR West warns that these seats can sell out on popular trains, so book as soon as sales open. Sale dates for each channel are in How to buy Shinkansen tickets and When to book what in Japan.

If you do not reserve
¥1,000 fee and no guarantee of space
Bring a 161–250 cm bag without a reservation and you pay a ¥1,000 fee (tax included) on board, and the conductor decides where it goes. If seats are full you may be asked to take another train.
- If you miss your reserved train, you cannot take oversized baggage into a non-reserved car on the next train; you must reserve again. Change the reservation before boarding if your plans change.
- Oversized baggage is not subject to reservation on conventional (non-Shinkansen) JR lines.
- Strollers, musical instruments and sports equipment within the size limit need no reservation, but you must reserve to use the oversized baggage area or compartment.

With a JR Pass
The pass changes nothing about the size rule; it only changes how you book. Pass holders reserve seats for free, so the oversized baggage seat is free too on trains the pass covers (not Nozomi or Mizuho, which need a separate ticket).
- The JAPAN RAIL PASS site states that on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, passengers with oversized baggage (this site: 161-250 cm in total) must reserve both their seat and the baggage area in advance.
- At a JR ticket office, a JR Pass holder tells the staff about the oversized baggage when reserving; online, the seat can be booked on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation (available since 1 June 2020).
- Seat reservations with the JR Pass carry no additional charge, so a seat with an oversized baggage area costs a pass holder nothing extra on trains the pass covers.
- The JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS online booking site cannot reserve these seats; use a ticket counter.
Step-by-step pass reservations, including the Nozomi ticket, are in JR Pass exchange and seat reservations.

Strollers, instruments, sports gear and wheelchairs
- Baggage with total dimensions (length + width + height) of 160 cm or less needs no reservation; it goes in the overhead rack, at your feet or in the deck baggage storage area.
- Strollers, sports equipment (bicycles, etc.) and musical instruments are outside the oversized baggage rule and can be carried on without a reservation, up to 250 cm in total. A reservation is still needed if you want to use the oversized baggage area behind the last row or an oversized baggage compartment.
- Wheelchairs (electric wheelchairs: four-wheeled ones only) may be brought aboard even if bulkier and heavier than the general carry-on limits, as long as they are around 120 cm in length and height and around 70 cm wide. When reserving a wheelchair seat, tell JR if you will also bring oversized baggage.
- Supreme Class cabins (Tokaido Shinkansen, cars 7 and 10) allow oversized baggage (161-250 cm in total) to be carried on.
- JR West states that starting from 1 July 2025 the oversized baggage compartments on some decks can be used without a reservation on a trial basis (JR Central mentions the same trial without a start date).

A simple plan for travellers with big suitcases
- Measure the bag and add the three sides before you leave home.
- Over 160 cm and riding the Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, Kyushu Shinkansen and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen? Book a seat with an oversized baggage area when you book the train.
- On a JR Pass, reserve at a ticket office, a reserved-seat ticket machine or JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation (if you bought the pass on the official site).
- Board only the reserved train; change the reservation before boarding if plans change.
FAQ
How big can a suitcase be on the Shinkansen without a reservation?
Up to 160 cm in total (length + width + height). That needs no reservation on any Shinkansen; put it at your feet, in the overhead rack or in the baggage storage area on the deck.
What happens if I bring a large suitcase without reserving?
On the Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, Kyushu Shinkansen and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, baggage of 161-250 cm in total brought without a reservation is charged a ¥1,000 fee (tax included), and the conductor tells you where to put it.
Does reserving an oversized baggage seat cost extra?
No. A seat with an oversized baggage area, or with an oversized baggage compartment, costs the same as an ordinary reserved seat or Green Car seat.
Do I need to reserve for a large suitcase on the Tohoku or Hokuriku Shinkansen?
JR states the reservation rule for the Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, Kyushu Shinkansen and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen only. This site has not verified a baggage reservation rule for the Tohoku, Hokkaido, Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen (JR East's own pages could not be read).
Can JR Pass holders book an oversized baggage seat?
At a JR ticket office, a JR Pass holder tells the staff about the oversized baggage when reserving; online, the seat can be booked on JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation (available since 1 June 2020). Seat reservations with the JR Pass carry no additional charge, so a seat with an oversized baggage area costs a pass holder nothing extra on trains the pass covers.
Can I take a large suitcase into a non-reserved car?
No. Oversized baggage (161-250 cm) cannot be taken into non-reserved cars. If you miss your reserved train you must reserve again rather than move to a non-reserved car.
What is the largest item allowed?
Items over 250 cm in total cannot be brought on board. JR's general carry-on allowance is two pieces, each up to 30 kg, 250 cm in total and 200 cm in length.
